Our multiday DOGSLEDDING EXPEDITIONS take you to remote corners of northernmost Lapland and offer you a chance to experience once in a lifetime adventures in the Arctic wilderness. As we explore the vast expanses of the Lapland tundra and mountain regions, we will travel through indigenous Sámi reindeer land and cross national borders by dog sled. On our expeditions you will encounter wildlife, get to know the local culture and experience some of the finest scenery that Europe’s last wilderness has to offer. All expeditions are operated exlusively for your own private party. Early booking is recommended!

SIGNAL VALLEY DOGSLEDDING EXPEDITION

On the Signal Valley Dogsledding Expedition you will experience some of the most breathtaking sceneries that Arctic Lapland has to offer during the most enjoyable time of the year – the beautiful Arctic spring! Accompanied by a guide from Fjellborg Arctic Journeys, you will drive your own team of sled dogs from the coast of the Norwegian Arctic Ocean, across a magnificent high alpine area to the Fjellborg Homestead in Poikkijärvi, deep in the heart of Swedish Lapland in northern Scandinavia.

As a musher, you will sometimes need to work almost as hard as your sled dogs, helping to steer a heavy sled that is loaded with food and equipment. The weather is known to be changeable during spring, and for section of the trail you may sometimes experience extreme weather – a challenge that will make you reconnect with your inner strength and realise that you have resources far greater than you ever imagined. Many of our expedition participants say that, even though the journey sometimes requires tough physical work, the quiet peace of the Arctic landscape enables them to relax, reflect and rejuvinate – while experiencing an adventure of a lifetime.

The Signal Valley Expedition is suitable for both beginners and experienced wilderness travellers looking for a spectacular hands-on adventure in Arctic Lapland’s pristine nature. A thorough introduction to sled dog driving, the equipment and the itinerary will be provided at the welcome meeting in Tromsø.

Expedition Itinerary

Day 1
The program begins in the lively city of Tromsø in Arctic Norway where you are greeted at your hotel by Fjellborg Arctic Journeys. Tromsø is the capital of Arctic Norway and due to the many polar expeditions that have begun here the city is often referred to as the ”Gateway to the Ice Sea”. Tromsø’s urban mountain panorama is spectacular and thanks to its thriving café scene the city has also been nicknamed ”Paris of the North”. On the first evening you will be briefed on the expedition itinerary and enjoy a delicious welcome dinner.

Day 2-3
On the next day we transfer out to the beautiful Signal Valley which is the starting point for our expedition. Here you are introduced to the team of sled dogs who will be your best friends during the coming days. The friendly and athletic Fjellborg Alaskan huskies know nothing better than to embark on a major expedition. Before departure you will receive thorough instructions on how to handle the dogs and how to pack and drive your sled.

During this unique adventure you will experience the most spectacular scenery that Arctic Lapland has to offer. The journey begins near the border between Norway and Sweden, from here the trail climbs up to a mountain plateau where we will traverse the largest area of permafrost in Europe. From the magnificent mountains we continue down to the remote lake district of Råstojaure, which lies in the heart of indigenous Sámi country.

Day 4-5
After Camp Råsto the trail continues in a southerly direction, towards the large Lake Torne in Swedish Lapland. Here we stay in a genuine Lapland Homestead in the remote village of Kattuvouma. From Kattuvuoma the trail takes us to our private Väkkärä Lodge, which offers comfortable accommodations in pristine surroundings.

Day 6
On the final day of our expedition we will sled from Väkkärä Lodge to the Fjellborg Homestead in Poikkijärvi. Our Homestead is situated only a short walk from the world famous ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi and it is a popular choice among our guests to combine this expedition with a visit to this spectacular hotel.

For participants choosing to depart from Kiruna upon completion of the program on the 6th day, a transfer to the airport will be provided.

NORTH CAPE DOGSLEDDING EXPEDITION

The magnificent North Cape Dogsledding Expedition takes you from interior Lapland to Europe’s northernmost point: The North Cape by the Arctic Ocean. During a 600 km long journey you will drive your own team of sled dogs through Sweden, Finland and Norway and experience some of the most remote corners of the subarctic wilderness. This once-in-a-lifetime program ends with sea journey onboard the legendary Hurtigruten cruise liner, which takes you to the Norwegian city of Tromsø.

Our accommodations during the expedition range from sleeping in a tent to staying in rustic mountain huts and at comfortable hotels. Most often, it is the nights spent winter camping underneath the northern sky that our participants cherish the most. Being able to pitch a tent anywhere along the trail – on a mountain slope with amazing vistas, in the quiet boreal forests, or on the vast frozen tundra, gives an enormous sense of freedom and a chance to fully experience the elements of nature. You will be surprised at how fast you adapt physically and mentally to cold and snow.

The North Cape Expedition is suitable for active travellers looking for an adventure of a lifetime. Weather conditions in the alpine regions of Arctic Lapland can sometimes be demanding, especially during strong winds. Guests must be capable of sledding in these conditions and to provide good care of our dogs during all circumstances. At the welcome meeting in Poikkijärvi you will receive a thorough introduction to sled dog driving and the equipment and throughout the expedition you will enjoy the support of our professional wilderness guides.

Expedition Itinerary

Day 1-4
This unique program begins at Kiruna airport in Swedish Lapland where you will be greeted by our guides who will drive you to our Homestead in Poikkijärvi, where you will be briefed on the expedition itinerary and introduced to our expedition guides. Next you will change into expedition gear, re-pack your equipment and get ready to meet your dog team. The Fjellborg Alaskan huskies are exceptionally friendly and athletic dogs that know nothing better than to set out on a long distance working expedition.

The initial leg of our journey takes us from the Homestead in Poikkijärvi to the comfortable Väkkärä Wilderness Lodge, approx. 15 km further north. During the following days we will sled through northern parts of Swedish and Finnish Lapland, and experience the absolute wilderness. From Finland we will cross into Arctic Norway where we explore the town of Kautokeino which is a cultural capital for the indigenous Sámi people. The town has a human population of 3000 and more than 100 000 reindeer.

Day 5-11
After Kautokeino the trail climbs to higher altitudes and we enjoy several days of exciting sledding in a magnificent alpine terrain. Our accommodations range from sleeping in a tent to staying in rustic mountain huts and at comfortable hotels. After many days surrounded by white expanses the sudden appearance of the blue Arctic Ocean comes as a surprise. When the trail descends towards the coastal villages of Arctic Norway, the most northernmost fishing villages in the world, the scenery changes remarkably.

Before we reach the goal of our sledding expedition we enjoy a short sea journey together with our dogs. Our arrival at the North Cape, at 70° 58′ N, is a truly memorable moment. While our dogs receive a comfortable car ride back to the Homstead in Poikkijärvi, we celebrate in style on the last evening of our expedition.

Day 12
At 6.00 a.m. the next day we depart from Honningsvåg on the legendary Hurtigruten cruise liner. During an exciting full day at sea we experience the amazing Arctic Ocean and Norway’s beautiful coast and archipelago. On our voyage the Hurtigruten stops at four ports of call (Havøysund, Hammerfest, Øksfjord and Skjervøy) until finally arriving at our destination, which is the lively city of Tromsø. Around midnight we check into the centrally located and comfortable Rica Ishavshotel.

Day 13
After breakfast we head out to explore this inviting coastal city. Tromsø boasts a population of 63 000 and is home to the Norwegian Polar Institute and the University of Tromsø. The city’s urban mountain panorama is spectacular and thanks to its rich café scene and social life Tromsø has been nicknamed ”The Paris of the North”. Among the attractions in Tromsø is the Polaria activity centre, which explores themes related to the Polar Regions, and the unique Arctic Cathedral. There are many attractions in and around the city and while our expedition has now come to an end, you can choose to add a few extra days to your Arctic holiday by staying in Tromsø at your own expense. If you choose to depart from Tromsø on Day 13, you will receive a transfer to the airport in time for your flight.
