Returning to the cosy lodge and the warm sauna in the afternoon, and watching for the dancing northern lights in the evening is part of the attraction too.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Dogsledding Northern Lights Excursion provides a perfect balance between hands-on fun and peaceful relaxation. You will learn how to drive your own team of huskies through the wilderness of Arctic Lapland and spend two nights at our comfortable and quiet Väkkärä Wilderness Lodge. On the second day you are free too explore the winter wonderland surrounding the lodge, get better acquainted with the dogs on a dog sledding daytrip, or perhaps go for a snowshoe walk.
In the evenings, fabulous meals are prepared in the Main Lodge while you relax by the woodstove and recount the activities of the day. Don’t forget to watch out for the dazzling northern lights before you retire to your cosy log cabin for the night! The Northern Lights Excursion is equally popular with couples and private groups seeking a unique and exciting winter getaway.
Excursion Itinerary
Day 1
After pick-up at Kiruna Airport by a guide from Fjellborg Arctic Journeys and a short transfer, you arrive to the village of Poikkijärvi, where the Fjellborg Homestead and kennel is situated. This has been the home of the Fjellborg family for nine generations and since thirty years it is also the home of a large family of huskies.
After a welcome lunch you will change into quality Arctic gear and get ready to meet the dogs! The Fjellborg Alaskan huskies are exceptionally friendly and love the attention they receive from our guests. Before it is time to hit the trail your guide will give a “Mushing 101” – a thorough introduction to everything you need to know about the dogs, the sled and the equipment.
In the afternoon you set out on the adventure, travelling by dog sled accompanied by your guide along a pristine wilderness trail to our comfortable Väkkärä Wilderness Lodge, where you will stay for two nights. Upon arriving to the lodge you help out feeding and watering the dogs by their dog houses before you go to relax in the hot sauna. Later in the evening a wonderful meal featuring the exciting local cuisine is served in the main building. Your accommodation for the night is in private log cabins.
Day 2
After breakfast in the morning of the second day, you have a full day to enjoy the pristine landscape surrounding the lodge. Why not take the dog team on a small outing to explore the wilderness, try snowshoeing or, if you prefer, spend the day by the fireplace, enjoying a glass of wine and a good book. The sauna provides soothing relaxation and in the evening another wonderful dinner is served in the large main building. If the weather is clear there is a good chance you will be able to watch the spectacular northern lights dance outside the window.
Day 3
After breakfast in the morning of the third and final day it is time to re-pack our sleds and return to the Homestead in Poikkijärvi. There will be plenty of time to take in the scenery and perhaps spot some wildlife along the way. We set out in a westerly direction, with the Homestead in Poikkijärvi as our goal. When we arrive at the kennel there will be time to change clothes and sit down to enjoy coffee or tea and some snacks. If you are departing from Kiruna Airport on the same day, you will receive a transfer from the Homestead to Kiruna airport in time for your flight.
