PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Visualise yourself behind a team of spirited sled dogs, travelling in silence across the frozen Arctic landscape. On the exciting Dogsledding Overnight Adventure you will drive your own team of sled dogs to our comfortable and private Väkkärä Lodge for a relaxing overnight stay in beautiful wilderness surroundings.
Before departure your guide will show you how to harness your team, how to communicate with the dogs and how to manoeuvre your sled in different situations along the trail. This excursion is an ideal choice for those who want to taste what Arctic Lapland has to offer but have limited time.
Excursion Itinerary
Day 1
After a short transfer from the airport you arrive at the Fjellborg Homestead in the village of Poikkijärvi, where nearly all of our excursions begin. Beautifully situated overlooking the magnificent Torne River, the Homestead is an ideal gateway to the vast wilderness of Arctic Lapland.
At the Homestead you will be outfitted with quality Arctic gear and become acquainted with our helpful guides and friendly sled dogs. Before departure you will receive thorough instructions in how to handle your dog team and sled.
In the afternoon we set out on the excursion which takes us from the Homestead in Poikkijärvi to our privately owned Väkkärä Wilderness Lodge, which has a remote and peaceful setting by Lake Väkkärä. Driving your own team of sled dogs through the snowy boreal forests is a memorable experience.
When we arrive at the lodge the dogs are treated to a well deserved rest in their doghouses, which you will help fill up with fresh straw before heading to the sauna to relax. In the evening we sit down for a three-course dinner in the main building, savouring some of the delicacies of the Lappish cuisine. Far from roads and city skylines, a stay at our comfortable Väkkärä Wilderness Lodge provides a peaceful break from everyday life.
Day 2
The next morning we enjoy a big breakfast before we go out to feed the dogs. On this second day of mushing we have plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, take photos and perhaps spot some wildlife too.
The last leg of our journey takes us back to the Fjellborg Homestead in Poikkijärvi, where we say farewell to the dogs in their home environment. After changing clothes we will enjoy coffee and some snacks together. If you are departing from Kiruna Airport on the same day, you will receive a transfer from the Homestead to the airport in time for your flight.
